Access to Lighting and Cooking Energy Among Vulnerable Populations in Northern Nigeria – March 2024

About the Report

Access to fuel and energy for cooking meals, charging mobile phones, and lighting among displaced and host community households is crucial to humanitarian relief and development. It is linked to and has multiplier effects on issues such as food security, shelter, protection, health, livelihoods, sustainable management of natural resources, and resilience to climate change. Notably, a lack of access to safe and sustainable energy exposes displaced women and girls to heightened risks of sexual and gender-based violence because they often travel long distances to collect firewood for cooking.

This report assessed the main challenges, opportunities, and situation of energy access for lighting and cooking among displaced and host community households in Northern Nigeria. The findings identified key sources of energy for lighting and cooking and related practices, challenges faced by consumers and vendors in acquiring and utilizing energy sources, the perceived impact of tree felling, and coping measures.
