Impact of Nigeria-Niger Border Closure on Livelihood Systems and Insecurity in Jibia LGA, Katsina State – January 2024

About the Report

Following the military coup in the Republic of Niger on July 26, 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria ordered the closure of all land border crossings with Niger on August 4, 2023. Within three weeks of the border closure, about 8.5 million Nigerians in border towns and communities lost nearly USD 50 million in potential earnings and revenues. Amid heightened insecurity and soaring food prices in border communities, local business activity has also slowed considerably.

This report detailed and analysed the impacts and effects of the border closure and other recent shocks on trade, livelihoods, and insecurity in Jibia Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State.

Findings show that farming, livestock rearing, and agribusiness in Jibia LGA have been negatively affected by increased banditry and kidnapping mostly perpetrated by the youth, especially since the Nigeria-Niger border was closed. Contrasting a growth in banditry and kidnapping in Jibia, farmer-herder conflicts are gradually declining in the LGA.
