2023 Farming Operations_Climatic Change Mitigation Measures_Information Management Systems in Northeast Nigeria – Nov. 2023

Nearly 80% of residents in northeastern Nigeria depend on agriculture as their primary source of livelihood and income. Scaling agricultural livelihoods is key to boosting food security, nutrition, and income-generating activities in rural communities, in particular crisis-affected families in the northeast region. However, farming activities are persistently disrupted by conflicts and a large portion of farmland remains insecure and inaccessible.

Moreover, climate change is significantly affecting agricultural activities, leading to food supply shortages and the loss of income and livelihoods. Taking this into account, the Nigeria Context Analysis Team (NCAT) of Mercy Corps Nigeria conducted an assessment in the states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY States) to analyze agriculture operations during the 2023 rain-fed farming season (June-October).

This report focuses on farming as a livelihood source, access to arable land, information management systems, climate change adaptation measures, agriculture insurance, crop yields, and climate change coping mechanisms. This report is intended to support the work of state ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs); private sector actors; development and humanitarian actors operating in Northeast Nigeria, particularly those that focus on optimizing agricultural practices and marketing opportunities; and
organizations operating in intervention priority areas, including those supporting vulnerable farming households that are negatively affected by climate change in Northeast Nigeria.
