Smallholder Farmer Practices to Counter Flooding and Drought in NE Nigeria Aug. 2023

According to an assessment conducted by the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) on flooding in 2022, an estimated NGN 700 billion naira (NGN) was lost in Nigeria’s agricultural-related sector, including 8.4 million tons of crops valued at NGN 384.4 billion. Flooding in northwest and northeast Nigeria was caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and blockage of existing drainage.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) projects that flooding will again affect multiple regions of Nigeria in 2023. Accordingly, the Nigeria Analysis Team (NAT) conducted a brief assessment in the states of Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, and Gombe (BAY-G) to determine the preparedness of smallholder farmers facing the prospect of flooding.

The assessment is based on data collected between June 26 to July 7 during focus group discussions (FGDs) with smallholder farmers, and key informant interviews (KIIs) with agricultural market actors such as business owners (primarily dealing in food commodities), agro-dealers, grain aggregators, food processors, and livestock feed vendors.
